When we decided to go hiking down in Draper's beautiful canyon yesterday, Nikki woke up complaining of a sore throat and wanting to sleep all day. I ran to the store, got her medicine and waited for it to perform its magic...
When I was reasonably sure we were free to go, Cameron and I bolted for the car. Aw, c'mon, you can't tell me you've never felt that way. As much as I love my daughter, taking her on a hike is like trying to capture a fly without a swatter. How do you do that? Strong hairspray. Ever sprayed a fly with that? If you're good and spray it on the first time, it'll drop like a rock. It works on spiders too. I believe it was Newton who said, "An object that is in motion will not change its velocity unless you use strong hairspray." Keep in mind, we will not hairspray my daughter, even when she is a pest, but we do knock her out with necessary medication.
Because she was ill, we didn't make it to Draper. We went to Snow Basin. We saw a falcon flying, two dead and bloated deer by the roadside, and a rattlesnake. The snake was very much alive and saw us first. I would never have seen it had I not heard a peculiar rattling sound. Although I keep my camera strapped to my body, I wasn't thinking about taking the picture as much as I was slowly backing away.
We saw some peaceful sites and if you look at them hard, close your eyes, and inhale, you'll experience them in your mind.
Cameron calls this ring of bark a hat, until I reminded him that paper comes from wood and it's obviously an empty toilet paper roll. Despite this, he wore it for quite some time until it fell off.
Don't get confused. This is not the biblical version of the burning bush you've heard so much about. This is a brightly colored tree bursting through the tops of its friends, showing off. You know, the neighbor that always has to be the first to put a pool in his backyard? Same thing.
Here we are, my son and I, just before I tossed him into a beautiful mountain stream. Okay, I didn't think of it at the time or I might have. That would make for fun pictures, eh?
We got to see boats. Sailboats, speed boats, water skiers, and all. It was as inviting as it looks. What a perfect day! Even my sunburn was worth the outdoors this time.
As this family of bicyclists passed us, the mother was pushing her bike, peering out from the sweat dripping between her eyes. She said she was finished and I laughed, "Not 'til you see a really steep incline and a decline that twists and drops." Any spirit she had left in her face disappeared. "You can just walk when you see it," I told her, and then we carried on.
We found some snake grass that pulls apart and then sticks back together like a puzzle. Cameron had a good time with it and made a crown and a necklace. He said he couldn't make a dress, otherwise there would be a picture included of me in the whole snake grass dress outfit. I'd be tempted to do a torch dance and that would be dangerous.
When we got back home with our sunburned faces, arms and legs, Nikki was awake, feeling better and ready to put on a show! Then we're back to the same ole' grind. How was your weekend?
